VIRTUALimprint eBooks are available
in the following formats. [If you want to convert your own books, check my
eBook Converters page.]
- MS/Reader [.lit]: Read on Windows-based PCs, desktops, laptops,
pocket PCs and Windows Mobile devices. MS/Reader for desktops and
laptops is available FREE from
Microsoft
[it is part of the standard install suite for Pocket PCs].
This format is, in my opinion, the best, the highest quality and
the most comfortable. MS/Reader eBooks are highly compressed,
and you can read the same eBook on your handheld or your desktop.
Note: Activation of MS/Reader is not required in order
to read
VIRTUALimprint ebooks.
If you are using Mozilla Firefox or Netscape to
view this site, please be aware that these browsers may corrupt
MS/Reader files on download. To avoid this problem, either use
Internet Explorer or the ZIP-armored files offered on our download
page.
- Adobe PDF [.pdf]: This format has the widest cross-platform
compatibilty of any. Adobe Acrobat Reader is available for Windows,
Macintosh, Unix, Linux, OS/2 and handhelds (though I wouldn't recommend
it). If your PC doesn't already have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed
then you must live under a rock somewhere. In that event you may
obtain a copy FREE from Adobe.
To use Adobe Reader, open the file and select the menu
item "View" and set to "fit in window" or "fit page". Adobe formatted
eBooks are optimized for reading on your PC's display; rather than
for printing hardcopies. If you'd prefer a hardcopy edition, consider
purchasing one of the hard or soft cover books. You'll be much more
satisified.
- Palm Reader [.pdb]: Read on Palm/OS powered handhelds (PDAs,
smartphones, Tungsten, Treo, etc) using Palm Reader, available
FREE from
Palmsource.com. (Note: This is a trial version of Palm Reader
Pro that downgrades to the free product after 2 weeks if you don't purchase an
unlock code for it. You don't need the paid, pro features in order to read
VIRTUALimprint eBooks.)
Readers for the Palm/OS format are also available from
ereader.com for nominal prices. These include
versions for Windows PCs, Macintosh and other handhelds, which would make
the format multi-platform. I haven't downloaded the Windows version
but the product description looks remarkably like one that
Palm once offered free of charge (but alas no longer).
- MobiPocket Reader [.prc]: A multiplatform format you can read on
most handhelds (Palm-powered, Windows Mobile, Pocket PCs, smartphones,
Blackberries, etc) and on Windows-based desktop and laptop PCs. Free
and "Pro" (i.e. paid) readers are available from
MobiPocket. Activation of the
reader is not necessary to read
VIRTUALimprint ebooks.
- MS Rich Text [.rtf]: A Windows format that may be read with Microsoft
Office Word, MS Wordpad, etc. This format preserves text formatting, etc.
With the proper converter you may convert the file to your own eBook format.
- ASCII Text [.txt]: Basic text version without formatting which you
may read on nearly any platform in existence, or reformat to create your
own eBook. Note: I regard file format conversion as fair use
and not a violation of copyright, provided the converted material is not
redistributed.
- VIRTUALimprint WebBook:
Read on-line using your JavaScript-enabled web browser (Mozilla
FireFox, IE 5+, etc). WebBook turns your browser into an
easy-to-use eBook reader.
