Mars in 3D

Holmes Stereograph

I have assembled some stereo photographs of the surface of Mars by downloading images from NASA's website. The images are from Curiosity's navigation camera, which takes stereo images in order for scientists to be able to determine the distance of an object they wish to observe.

If you have a Stereograph of the sort used in Victorian times for stereo viewing, you may download these images, print them and view them to see Mars in three dimensions. The images are in black-and-white Curiosity's nav cam is monochrome), but they are nonetheless striking -- both familiar and alien at the same time.

The last image caused a stir because it appears as if a bright light can be seen in the distance. This is undoubtedly due to a glitch in the camera (it appears in the right frame but not in the left); however the UFO chasing crowd used it as "proof" of extra terrestial activity.
